Imagine buying a ticket to watch your favourite star on the big screen — and then finding the star himself sitting just a few seats away from you.

That is exactly what happened in Chennai on Friday night, when Rajinikanth walked into a regular public show of Jailer 2 and watched the film sitting among his own fans.

According to the film's makers, it is the first time in 40 years that the Superstar has done this. And the video of the moment is now going viral everywhere.

Quick Facts

  • Film: Jailer 2 (released October 15, 2026)
  • Venue: PVR Cinemas, Phoenix Marketcity, Velachery, Chennai
  • When: Friday night
  • With him: Grandson Linga and music composer Anirudh Ravichander
  • Video shared by: Sun Pictures on X

What Happened on Friday Night

On Friday night, Rajinikanth arrived quietly at PVR Cinemas inside Phoenix Marketcity in Chennai's Velachery area. There was no red carpet, no grand entry and no big show.

The 75-year-old superstar was dressed simply, with only a small security detail around him. He was welcomed by the cinema team at the entrance, like any other guest.

Then came the part nobody expected. Instead of a private lounge or a special closed screening, he walked straight into the auditorium and took his seat among regular moviegoers who had simply bought a ticket for the show.

For the fans inside that hall, an ordinary movie night turned into a story they will tell for the rest of their lives.

The Video That Broke the Internet

The moment was captured on video and shared by the film's production house, Sun Pictures, on X.

Posting the clip, the banner wrote: "For the first time in 40 years, Superstar Rajinikanth joins fans to witness #Jailer2 on the big screen! #Jailer2 Industry Mega Blockbuster."

The post also declared a "#Jailer2 Rampage in theatres worldwide" — and within hours, the clip had travelled far beyond X, racing through Instagram, WhatsApp forwards and fan pages across the world.

In the video, the hall erupts the moment fans realise who has walked in. People jump to their feet, phones come out, and the cheering just does not stop. It is pure, unscripted joy — and that is exactly why the clip is winning the internet.

A Family Outing — Linga and Anirudh by His Side

Rajinikanth did not come alone. He was accompanied by his grandson Linga, which made the outing a rare and sweet public moment for the family.

Also with him was the film's music composer, Anirudh Ravichander, whose songs and background score have been among the biggest talking points of Jailer 2.

It was a fitting group: a grandfather, a grandson, and the composer whose music has been echoing through theatres since release day — all of them watching the film the way it is meant to be watched: with the crowd.

Fans Erupt Online, and the Industry Joins In

The online reaction was just as loud as the one inside the hall. Fans flooded social media with the clip, and #Jailer2 and #Thalaivar were soon trending as the video crossed timelines in language after language.

The celebration around the film has been building all week. Director Nelson Dilipkumar recently posted on X: "Theatres are going bonkers! Thalaivar magic hits different."

Superstar Allu Arjun also praised the film on X, calling it "a true showcase of Rajinikanth sir's star power, swag & aura."

And the legendary Kamal Haasan had earlier congratulated his dear friend Rajinikanth and the whole Jailer 2 team after the film emerged as a superhit worldwide.

Why This Moment Is So Big

To understand the frenzy, you have to understand the 40-year gap. Rajinikanth is among the most idolised actors in the history of Indian cinema, and an unannounced appearance like this — sitting among ordinary ticket-buyers — has been almost unheard of for decades.

The timing made it sweeter. Jailer 2, the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster Jailer, released on October 15 and has been on a dream run ever since.

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the film has already collected around Rs 628 crore worldwide in just nine days, overtaking the entire lifetime earnings of the first Jailer. Reports say it is now the second highest-grossing Tamil film ever, chasing the record of Rajinikanth's own 2.0.

The film brings Rajinikanth back as the iconic Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, with a star-packed cast including Vidya Balan, S. J. Suryah, Ramya Krishnan, Mohanlal and Shivarajkumar — plus a much-talked-about cameo by Hrithik Roshan.

What's Next for Jailer 2

The Jailer 2 storm is not slowing down. Trade watchers expect the film to cross Rs 650 crore worldwide very soon, with the Rs 700 crore mark — and the all-time Tamil cinema record — now firmly in sight.

But whatever the final numbers say, Friday night in Chennai may end up being the film's most remembered scene of all. And it was not even in the movie.

A 75-year-old superstar. A seat among his fans. And a wait of forty years, ended in one magical evening.
